The Man In Charge
This year's Secretary General (SG) shares with MUNITY his personal experiences relating to MUN and speaks about this year's conference.
Secretary General Profile:
Name: Alessandro
Surname: Guglielmi
School: Rijnlands Lyceum Wassenaar
How many M.U.N. Conferences have you attended?
I'm not 100% sure. I think THIMUN will be about my 18th [or] 20th conference. I have been in the MUN-circuit for quite awhile now!
What do you feel inspires you most about THIMUN?
To see so many young people having fun. The reason why so many people want to attend THIMUN is because everyone has a great time. The combination of the academic aspect and the social aspect just makes it a great experience. Weeks, even months before the conference you're so excited. Then during the conference you have an incredible time and the month after the conference you suffer from the well known "post-THIMUN-syndrome". THIMUN is more than just a five day simulation of the United Nations.
How come you decided to apply for the Secretary General position?
I don't really know to be honest. A few people told me I should apply so eventually I did. I think it's just because as SG, you can really make changes and contribute.
And what was the first thing that came to your mind when you found out you got the job?
I couldn't believe it. I was extremely happy and couldn't wait to get started.
What is the most valuable skill you've learnt through THIMUN?
Teamwork. It's incredibly important to try to do everything as a team and to get everyone involved. This way you get multiple views from different perspectives, so the quality of the final product is always higher.
How about your most cherished THIMUN memory?
Last year's closing ceremony. I was a student officer last year and when the closing ceremony came to a close, all the student officers were still talking amongst each other on the stage. Somehow, I just didn't want to get off the stage. We didn't want to leave because we knew it would mean that the conference was definitely coming to an end.
Would you ever consider dropping out because of the unbearable work load?
Never; THIMUN and MUN in general, for that matter, is my number one priority.
Which do you personally consider the most currently pressing issue in the world?
Two things. First of all, world hunger. There are 1.02 billion undernourished people in the world today. This means that almost one in six people do not get enough food, while there is enough food for everyone on the planet. Secondly, education. Education is the key to the improvement of the quality of life in my opinion. Education still isn't accessible enough for many people, and this has to change.
How would you like to be remembered by future THIMUN generations?
As the SG who was happy and cheerful, and who motivated many people to give MUN all they have. Being remembered would be more than enough, seeing as it's all about the conference being remembered and not the individual.
What is your advice to all THIMUN participants, especially to THIMUN first-timers?
THIMUN might seem intimidating but there is no reason why you shouldn't speak up. Don't be scared to take the floor – raise that placard!
